As summer is coming to a close, so is the season of cotton mini skirts, simple tees and cute, comfy sandals. Enjoy your last few weeks of warm weather with a look that is classic and elegant, yet comfy and fun at the same time. I picked out a few pieces from J.Crew that I bought at their summer sale and went with an entire look! What pieces are your end of summer must wears?
Is there such a thing as too prep to function?
For a day out shopping, I couldn’t resist wearing my JCrew button-up and pearly necklace from target. To pair with it, I used my new Kate Spade Saturday Bag that I bought off of Vinted, an app where you can sell (or buy!) items from others!! I felt unbelievably fabulous wearing this outfit and being able to shop in it. I managed to buy some other pieces from J.Crew that because of the July 4th sale, I recieved 50% off each item!
Can you say YES YES YES! I also went all out with my makeup because usually during the day I can’t because of swimming with kids.
For my eyes I used Clinique’s buttered toast shadow duo, with Calvin Klein mascara and the new pushup liner from Benefit! (Love this product, btw!) My Cheeks has benefit’s dandelion blush and my lips are Nar’s Niagara shade lipstick. To prep and prime my face, I used MAC’s prep and prime powder that is a soft and fine white powder, it feels AMAZING on. To fill in my brows I used my Ultra brow pencil in brunette and to finish it off, Urban Decay’s De-slick spray is my new favorite.
You could say it was a good day. 🙂
Lately, I have become super obsessed with my monogram. I have ordered so many things off etsy that are monogram, and I should totally NOT be ordering things online when I am trying to save money, but these were all so cute, that I could not resist! The first one that started the trend was a monogram for my laptop, because why not?
I now (courtesy of various etsy shops) have accumulated a nice little collection. Besides, if you didn’t monogram it, is it really yours?
To start of with, I bought a simple gold monogrammed necklace for recruitment this year and let me tell you, I did not want to spend millions of dollars on this necklace. Instead a got a cheap one from etsy and it actually turned out nice! This one is from Vitobravo1 on etsy and there is a direct link to the necklace I purchased. While the material is very thin, it works for my purpose and didn’t cost me 160 dollars.
For a while I had been dying to buy a Lilly Pulitzer print monogram sticker to put anywhere. I haven’t put it on anything yet, I am saving it for something special. The print on this one is PERFECT however and it would fit my iphone if that is indeed what I wanted to do. I bought this one from CustomMonogramDecals on Etsy. I haven’t taken the contact paper off because I am unsure of where it should go! 🙂
I also bought a mini gold monogram for my kindle case and it is beautiful! From LeBoutiquebyLE came this adorable mini monogram meant for an iphone charger, I will probably order another it is so beautiful!
Two items I have been using NONSTOP are my tumbler and my camelbak that I monogrammed. The tumbler is adorable with a bow that I bought from CBJMonograms and it shipped super quickly! My camelbak took FOREVER to ship but I finally received it this last week from SouthernSassGCU. The bows are so girly and cute! I am officially obsessed.
Monogramsandmore2 is where I bought the monogram on my laptop, and my first official monogram! It has held up well and I love it but I wish the color had been different.
Last, but not least, I bought a monogram from my car (so cute!) from MyMonogramHeaven and finally washed my car to put it on. It is absolutely adorable and I totally recommend it. It makes me feel so girly. I haven’t included a photo of this because it is currently dark outside, which does not exactly work well for pictures.
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did and let me know if you have any awesome monogrammed items or sites!!
It’s finally almost the fourth of July and I don’t know about you, but every year I struggle to find the perfect outfit. I know that I want an outfit that is comfortable and casually cute, yet patriotic in spirit of the holiday. I wish I could say that I owned something american flag print, but I don’t. Since this is the case, I had to search for something in my closet that resembled the colors of the flag in my outfit.
Now I don’t wear a ton of red, but I do own white. I figured a white shirt and a blue skirt from JCrew and a red rosette necklace would be perfect. Something red like a scarf or a necklace, your shoes or even swap the white shirt out for a red one, anything will do. I chose to wear the skirt below (from JCrew) and finally through a process of elimination, a buttonup knit from BCBG.
For accessories, to go with necklace, I picked my gold gladiator sandals with my pearl earrings and gold accessory accents. Here is the look I went for:
This outfit of the day is one that I found was the preppy look I love, but being relaxed and kid friendly for working with kids all day long. It was also easy to throw together for when I am getting in and out of the pool at work. It was a “hair wash day” for me, so instead of washing my hair in the morning, then again at night to eliminate the chlorine from the pool, I decided to use this Vineyard Vines hat to cover my hair, and keep the sun out of my eyes!
Ignore the awful lighting, I had to use my sister’s mirror :p
“Pretty in Paradise”
This month I received my FIRST Ipsy Glam Bag. Contained inside the beautiful bag was five beauty items, 3 makeup related, 1 perfume and the last a hair product. This months bag was designed by Rebecca Minkoff and I could not contain my excitment!
The first product I tried was the NYX butter gloss in Eclair. I am usually not a fan of lipgloss. Ever. However, this butter gloss was not sticky or gooey and didn’t give my lips an outrageous color. It wasn’t my favorite but I did enjoy the sheen given by the gloss.
I was super excited to try the OFRA Eyebrow pencil in a universal color. It works wonders, the color seems to blend in with my natural brow and hair color. It came off easily with makeup remover as well, my only concern in the pencil is kinda weak so I hope I don’t break it.
A product that I was not excited to try was the shimmer eyeliner, thinking it would be a simple black eyeliner with glitter. I was in for a shock when I realized the eyeliner is actually an icy blue color! It does not come off easily, and I don’t enjoy the sharp applicator, so i don’t think this eyeliner is for me. I am not a fan of wild eye liner colors.
The perfume for this month is REAL TREE for her and it has a sweet floral scent and is light enough for day to day wear. I found that when used sparingly, it did not over power my senses. However, it doesn’t last all day, which was kind of a bummer.
The last product was a frizz free serum that made my hair shiny and I am interested to see if it really stops shedding! However, the sample won’t last long with the amount of hair I have, which is a bummer.
Overall, my impressions of this service are pretty good! I loved 4/5 of the products and hope that next month I love all five of them! I really enjoy how it is only ten dollars a month and I got a full sized lip gloss and eye brow pencil as well as the eyeliner. Definitely can’t wait until next month’s Glam Bag!!
It’s been almost three months since I bought myself a new pair of glasses and let me tell you. I fell in love with them! The Warby Parker brand and service is AMAZING. They have fantastic customer service and adorable, fashionable frames that look great.
What is even more amazing about this brand is that they allow you to order 5 pairs to try FOR FREE! Then you return the five pairs a week later and tell them which frames you want. They will even call your eye doctor for you! When my lenses came in and I have a problem with the adjustment on my face, they offered to remake my glasses for me free of charge. How amazing is that? I wanted to share this amazing company with all of you because I am floored by how wonderful it is. My frames and lenses only cost me $95 total! Now I can feel stylish in my glasses and not worry about the price! I think my favorite part though is the fact that they give a pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair purchased!I encourage you all to go check their new summer line out for yourself and see what you can find! I’ve noticed lately that since I can’t be the same shopaholic I usually am because of my trip to London in a year, that I have been in a shopping funk. Because of this funk, I have decided that once a week, I will be posting my fun shopping finds and essentials for different types of things!
For the first post in this series, I have compiled a list of my “Summer Essentials” or a gathering of things I consider “Must Haves” to survive a hot and humid summer in the Great lakes State (or really, any other state).
This first item is one that I have been obsessed with lately. Bought from Target.
Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo in Clean Freak is the best dry shampoo I have ever used. It smells amazing, it goes on nicely and brushes out well while soaking up oil and actually making my hair feel clean. For this reason alone, it has made my list.
The second item would be my Vineyard Vine’s baseball cap. It comes in cute colors with a whale on it. How adorable is that? I absolutely adore using this hat and it is perfect for sunny days or bad hair days!
In the same photo you can see my chosen stack of bracelets today! I have been obsessed with Pura Vida Bracelets and love the ones that donate to charity! They are coated in a wax so they are water proof and come in various colors and designs. go to PuraVidaBracelets.com and use the code MDaniels10 for 10% ALL FUTURE ORDERS!!
Now, no one likes to sweat from the heat. To help control that, my third summer essential is Secrets Clinical Strength deodorant. I love all the scents and have used each one at one time or another!
Summer heat means an oily face. I have started using Olay Fresh Effects in Shine, Shine, Go Away! It has actually helps keep my face oil free during the day and allows me to keep my makeup on all day long! It doesn’t smell weird either, which is always a bonus.
Another summer essential is the Mac Lightful Marine- Bright softening Lotion. This lotion has helped my skin stay moisturized while keeping the oil away! It may be more on the pricey side, but it is so worth it!!
Going along with the face theme, my number one is Chapstick brand, moisturizing chapstick. It is the only one that moisturizes but doesn’t leave my lips chapped so I have to use more. It also has SPF in it, so my lips won’t get sunburned 🙂
My last summer essential for today is a pair of really good sunglasses. I want to protect my eyes from the intense summer sun! This fun pair is from Target and is perfect for summer!
What summer essentials are on your list? let me know in the comments below! 🙂 Happy Summer!
So, as I submitted my THIRD order for these bracelets that I am obsessed with, I figured that I should probably mention what I have been up to lately…..
As I work four jobs (two are at home) and work on homework I find myself very busy. Not too busy, however, to spend some quality time with the readers of simply michelle raven and let you know what is new in my life! I am an official Pura Vida Campus rep. Don’t know what that is? Pura Vida is a company that makes bracelets to employ artisans in Costa Rica and provide full time jobs! Not only that, they have bracelets that support charities world wide and the bracelets look super cute on!

This past week and a half, I have been OBSESSED with cleaning my room, purging items that I don’t need and organizing in a pretty, sophisticated way that seems to go along with my style. I took advice from multiple sites for the best way to make my closet look nice and organized, just taking tips from photos on pinterest! I took all of my books that looked “picturesque” and put them into groups, adding details such as knickknacks, and boxes, etc. So without further ado:
(sorry if these aren’t perfect photos, my camera died!)
I have seven shelves in my closet, and a clothing rod to hang some of my (many) clothing items. I also had to improvise for places to put my shoes. An overview of my closet shows all of these shelves and the beading that is in front of the closet. These beads are old (my room was redone in high school) and purchased from Target.
Along the sides there were nails left over from when my sister occupied this room and on those I hung up my bathrobe and raincoats. You can also see my purses hanging on my bed.
To begin with, I put most of my shoes on this shoe organizer from walmart on the very top shelf and included boxes of special shoes and my backpack for school (since it is summer, the backpack is empty!)
You can also see an Anchorman 2 poster that I am holding for my friend Matt. Directly below the shoe shelf, I have a longer shelve then a set of four or five smaller shelves. The longer shelf is above the clothing rod.
On this shelf going from left to right you see my books that have a blue ish tone in color and my Calypso Lemonade jar that holds my coins, as well as Myrtle Beach sand from my cousin and her family. The books standing up are: Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks, my grandmother gave me this book before she died, so it holds some meaning to me. Then I have Down London Road by Samantha Young, A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis, Unaccustomed Earth by Lahiri, a book of writings by Sor Juana De La Cruz, The Rover by Behn, Me and Mr.Darcy by Alexandra Potter, Astophil and Stella by Sir Phillip Sidney, The Tragedy of Mariam by Cary, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and These Girls by Sarah Pekkanen.
Next, to separate the colors and the books I put a metal Eiffel Tower that I believe my mother got me from either Target or Claire’s. Behind this is a poster that I bought from a museum (musee D’orsay) in France when I went to Paris. Then I took some of my books from previous english classes and laid them flat to create different looks and draw the eye. Gender Relations, Vendler’s Poems, Poets and Poetry, Women Writers in Renaissance England and finally Timon of Athens by Shakespeare completes this stack and I placed a simple, yet vintage looking wicker bin on top to add another piece.
Finally, to complete this shelf, I took some books to stand up again, as I was running out of room for the shelves. I find that I may have too much stuff to put into this tiny room. Stacked here you see books that were mismatched from the other shelves (you’ll understand why in a moment…) To begin with Silver Linings Playbook starts this group off and moves onto The Assistant, Home, The Woman Warrior and finally a Schuler’s Book Store Bag, which is a local bookstore in Michigan!
The shelf right next door to it is the one that started my whole closet: This shelf contains a container my mother bought for me before I went to Paris and she had filled it with Euros for my trip. Underneath I have all of my hardcover Johanna Lindsey books. The next bin that is labelled Paris was bought for me from Pier 1 and contains all of my stationary for letter writing. The eiffel tower pencil sharpener was from my step father and behind that is my Paris travel journal, An intro to Literary Theory, The Road to Innocence and then some journals and my Lilly Pulitzer Planner from the previous year. The flowers in the front are dried carnations from Gamma Phi Beta stuff. 🙂
Moving on to the next shelf down, i tried to make a difference in the shelving. This shelf is by far my favorite. It contains more hardcovered books including Rhett Butler’s People, The Heir, Midnight Secrets, Sweet Savage Eden, The Time of The Dragon, and Across the Starlit Sea. My bodice necklace holder from pier 1 also separates the sections of books with a bottle of my Vera Wang Princess perfume and a perfume that my great grandmother had and never used. Then there is a Gamma Phi Beta shot glass that my big gave me and I collected coins in it this last school year. The little square in the front is a matchbox from my stepdad that is of London and Paris scenes. The wooden flower was a valentine’s day gift from him as well, the pearls are from my grandmother and the backscratcher is from Pier 1.
On the stack of books, I have a little cactus from a student I worked with and some classics such as P.S. I Love You, Anna Krenina, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Austenland, Home, For Whom The Bell Tolls and The Great Gatsby.
This next shelf has some of my more educational books on singing and such. The floral box I received from a cousin at my high school graduation, and it contains many of my art supplies. On top is a graduation gift from a friend and my next Nicholas Sparks read. 🙂 The book pile next to it contains singing books, auditioning books and a forensics book. The top mug is an Alice in Wonderland mug from a friend’s going away party and my favorite photo of Elvis that I bought from a fair at school. The standing books contain a bible that my friend had personalized for me, my current philosophy class’s textbook, Phantom of the Opera, and Water for Elephants. The figurine of a sea turtle in the front is from my mother.
The final shelf that I organized contains my tv series and magazines. There is my BCBG belt, a candle from graduation and some other knick knacks, such as a vera bradley pencil box, a stuffed scotty dog from my mother and a head band I made for a sorority function. The pink container is from my roommates mother, when she made me an Easter Basket. The shelf below is just boxes of random things that I couldn’t part with yet 🙂 So if you’re looking to redo your closet here are some simple tips!
- Try to create multiple levels with your books. Lay some down, stack them, don’t necessarily make them go in height order. This visually is appealing to the eye.
- Separate with boxes and containers as well as knick knacks to make the space not as cluttered and easier for the eyes.
- Don’t stick to one color, but do try to stick to a color palate, or it may look “Off”
I hope these help! Like for more room inspiration ideas 🙂
